The Opera Garnier is THE Parisian monument that leaves you speechless as soon as you walk through its doors. Designed by Charles Garnier and inaugurated in 1875, this opera house is a concentrate of everything that makes Second Empire Paris charming: bold baroque style, profuse gilding and breathtaking architectural details. Your journey begins with the legendary Grand Staircase in white marble - you immediately understand why ladies in crinolines came here to be seen. Then head to the foyers with their multicolored columns, mosaics and painted ceilings that rival Versailles. Each salon has its own character: Moon, Sun, Glacier Rotunda... And definitely don't miss the Pythonisse sculpture with its serpents, total artistic madness. Small downside to expect: the auditorium often closes for rehearsals, that's life in an active opera house. But honestly, the public spaces alone are more than enough to justify your visit.
